Mbangura Woodcarver’s Co-operative

Mbangura Woodcarver’s Co-operative is a community project based in the Okavango Region. The region, on Namibia’s border with Angola, provides kiaat, the hardwood of superior quality and beauty, from which Mbangra’s craftsmen create most of their wares.
The project was initiated in 1986 by a group of 50 traditional woodcarvers from the region, with a view to skills development and establishing a broader, more secure income base. The success of the enterprise and Namibia’s independence in March 1990, provided a greater openess to development, and the opportunity to consolidate operations. Membership now stands at around 300 members, from villages throughout the region.

Mbangura’s combination of fine material and traditional style graces corporate chambers, the halls of government and religion, and homes in Southern Africa and abroad.
The project’s furniture and ornaments form the cornerstone of Namibia’s tourist trade, with each handwrought piece a unique treasure. Resources are utilized to the full, even the smallest piece of wood is fashioned into a miniature African animal or piece of jewellery.

Mbangura’s most recent achievement has been the establishment of its tourist market at Okahandja, 71km north of Windhoek, situated at the junction of the main tourist routes, to the Namib Desert and west coast, and the Etosha National Park in the North.

Experience and expertise have prompted Mbangura to expand operations to cater for craft exports to South Africa and abroad. Whilst ranges will be standardised for such trade it must be remembered that each item or set is individually crafted. As such any small discrepancies in size, design or dimensions are part of the uniqueness of the products.

At the sametime, Mbangura continues to cater for its trade in customised items for government offices, commercial institutions, embassies, churches and individuals. These include pews, bar counters and stools, doors and panels.
