Kalahari Wild Silk Manufacturers

Until recently, the moth Gonometa Postiga was seen as a threat to livestock and game farming on the fringes of the Kalahari in the Omaheke and Hardap Regions. The moth hatches from cocoons which are spun by larvae on Camel thorn and blackthorn including prosopis trees upon which the larvae feed before pupating. The animals feed on the dry cocoons, which cannot be digested, resulting in severe rumen impaction and sometimes even in death.

Today, the collection of wild silk and its processing into various silk yarn and silk products provide employment and income to members of the community, mostly women, in Leonardville.

Products

The products include a wide range of scarves, shawls, throws, bedcovers and many more. Our clientele base is mostly tourists (Europe), craft and curio shops, lodges and hotel operators. Kalahari Wild Silk woven products are natural and very Namibian, in fact the fabric is originally Namibian. Wild silk textile has a very strong texture and can be utilize through all seasons.

Nailoke’s Solar House CC

We are producing and selling solar stoves which use the energy of direct sunlight to cook or heat food or drink. Since solar stoves do not need fuel, they help reduce fuel costs and time and effort spent on gathering firewood for village people. In addition, solar stoves are perfectly suited for low-income people because they are relatively cheap and affordable. I took a week training in 1998 on how to make a solar stove by women’s solidarity organization from Germany. 14 Namibian women participated in the training at the same time and 30 women in the next year 1990, but I am currently the only one who continues producing the solar stoves in Namibia. I demonstrate how to cook on a stove to the villagers to promote sales. I also sell cup cakes baked on this solar stove to the local residents.

Dune Tannery is small scale community business with 600 people. Here is a school and no business or government offices to ease the problem of unemployment. Ogongo Pottery Project

We are producing and selling pottery wares such as vases, cups and pots in the north of Namibia, Ogongo. Traditionally, the pottery wares have been widely used as commodities as well as gifts in our daily life and they are still popular among people in Namibia. They are also becoming popular as traditional decorations for people staying in the lodges in Namibia. These pottery wares are colored with natural red ochre from Ruacana which the Himba tribe applies on their bodies. The natural red ochre color blends well with the pottery clay color, which is one reason for its popularity. During the rainy season, the clay for pottery is unavailable and a ground hole used as a kiln is wet and unusable, so we make curtains and tablecloths instead.
