Mbangura Woodcarver’s Co-operative

Mbangura Woodcarver’s Co-operative is a community project based in the Okavango Region. The region, on Namibia’s border with Angola, provides kiaat, the hardwood of superior quality and beauty, from which Mbangra’s craftsmen create most of their wares.
The project was initiated in 1986 by a group of 50 traditional woodcarvers from the region, with a view to skills development and establishing a broader, more secure income base. The success of the enterprise and Namibia’s independence in March 1990, provided a greater openess to development, and the opportunity to consolidate operations. Membership now stands at around 300 members, from villages throughout the region.

Products

  • Furniture
    • Tables
    • Chairs
    • Doors, etc
  • Woodcarving
    • Bowls
    • Ornaments: elephants, hippos, Rhinos, Crocodiles, Giraffes, Traditional masks, Boxes, etc.

Mbangura’s combination of fine material and traditional style graces corporate chambers, the halls of government and religion, and homes in Southern Africa and abroad.
The project’s furniture and ornaments form the cornerstone of Namibia’s tourist trade, with each handwrought piece a unique treasure. Resources are utilized to the full, even the smallest piece of wood is fashioned into a miniature African animal or piece of jewellery.

Mbangura’s most recent achievement has been the establishment of its tourist market at Okahandja, 71km north of Windhoek, situated at the junction of the main tourist routes, to the Namib Desert and west coast, and the Etosha National Park in the North.

Experience and expertise have prompted Mbangura to expand operations to cater for craft exports to South Africa and abroad. Whilst ranges will be standardised for such trade it must be remembered that each item or set is individually crafted. As such any small discrepancies in size, design or dimensions are part of the uniqueness of the products.

At the sametime, Mbangura continues to cater for its trade in customised items for government offices, commercial institutions, embassies, churches and individuals. These include pews, bar counters and stools, doors and panels.

Hakusembe Project

I am pleased to introduce you to my company. I produce hardware products such as ploughs, traps for animals, metal pod and washing bashin and my most popular product is the manual plough machine. Some of our products are made of recycled metal. Since there is no electricity around here, I do not use electrical equipment such as welding machine, cutting machine, drilling machine. At the moment, I can make metal products by using wood fire, hummer, etc. Since I took training at training college, I have genuine skills to produce hardware products. Currently, my company is community-based business and convinient for small-scale farmers as well as local residents. I have expansion plans to venture into making steel bed frames, chairs and trailers.

Rundu Small Car Selling Project

This is the one-of-a-kind company that produces miniature cars by using waste materials around Rundu. The owner, Mr. Johannes Kambon, is phisically-disabled, but he has high skill to produce all handmade miniature cars. His father gave him a toy car as a present when he was little, and he took it apart then put all the parts together again. This is how he learned to assemble miniature cars by himself.
He buys waste materials such as empty oil cans, plastic bottle caps and used rubber mat from his friend who collects them. Then, he makes miniature cars with these waste materials. Why don’t you go ahead and get the all handmade miniature cars by using waste materials!
